Project Brief

In 2021, RDE Construction was appointed to reinstate the external cladding system. The appointment ensured full compliance with updated fire safety regulations. The project carried a contract value of £1,493,180.83, reflecting the scale and complexity involved.

The works required the removal of non-fire-rated cladding and replacement with fully approved aluminium systems. Additional design modifications were included to guarantee compliance and efficiency. The project ran from 6 April 2021 to 5 November 2021, with deadlines met throughout.

Development

A meticulous and phased approach was adopted to complete the reinstatement works. Each stage was carefully planned to reduce disruption while ensuring full compliance with regulations.

Phase 1: Removal of Non-Compliant Materials

• Non-fire-rated cladding and accessories were dismantled.
• All waste materials were managed responsibly and the site was maintained to high standards of cleanliness.
• Safety procedures were followed to protect residents and surrounding areas during removal.

Phase 2: Fire Safety Preparation

• Fire curb Tyvek was applied to prepare the building envelope.
• EPDM membranes were installed and inspected by a qualified engineer.
• All preparatory works were documented and approved to ensure regulatory compliance.

Phase 3: Structural Installation

• Supporting elements such as C Channels, brackets, helping hands, T rails, and L rails were fitted.
• Structural stability and alignment were achieved with precision.
• The framework was tested and approved to guarantee its suitability for the new system.

Phase 4: Installation of Fire-Rated Cladding

• Rainscreen duo slabs were installed for insulation and thermal performance.
• Fire-rated aluminium cladding panels were applied across the building fcade.
• Flashings and finishes were incorporated to provide a professional, modern aesthetic.
• The system was inspected to confirm compliance with the latest fire safety standards.

This structured process highlighted RDE Construction’s technical knowledge and ability to coordinate effectively with engineers, stakeholders, and clients.

Outcome

The Palamon Court cladding reinstatement project was completed successfully on 5 November 2021. Delivery was achieved within the agreed budget and timescale, despite the complexity of the works.

The new facade provided a durable, compliant, and visually appealing solution. By using fire-rated aluminium cladding, long-term safety for residents was secured. Compliance with updated building safety regulations was achieved in full, addressing previous risks associated with outdated materials.

In addition to safety, the reinstated cladding restored Palamon Court’s contemporary design, ensuring the building maintained its modern identity within Canterbury’s student housing market.
